NFC technology: First in the world

Garanti Payment Systems and mobile phone operator Avea, in conjunction with MasterCard and Gemalto, launched the world's first Near Field Communication SIM card at a press conference at CARTES in Paris. (07.12.2010) NFC SIM card that can be put in any mobile device to make contactless payments, eliminating the need for NFC-compatible mobile phones. This product called "Bonuslu Avea".
This new mobile payment solution is eliminates the need to purchase NFC-compatible mobile phones. Users convert their existing mobile phones to become compatible with NFC technology via a new SIM card. This new solution enables users to make payments at thousands of contactless payment terminals all around Turkey and the world, quickly and easily. Users will be able to benefit from the convenience of the new payment method without replacing their existing handset.
Over a million Garanti bank cardholders currently benefit from the bank's Trink contactless program for Tap&Go™ payments across the country. This new programme is designed to help many of these customers extend the range of devices for these PayPass enabled transactions to their mobile phone through the purchase of the specially adapted SIM card from any participating Avea store – and the simple replacement of their existing SIM card for this PayPass enabled version.
The launch of the BonusluAvea program from Avea and Garanti bank will enable consumers wanting to use their mobile phone for MasterCard Tap&Go™ payments at over 35,000 PayPass merchant locations in Turkey and at 265,000 locations around the world. In Turkey, the program can also be used for public transport ticketing (bus/underground/ferry and train) as well as for access to sports stadiums.
Bonuslu Avea won the "Most Innovative Use of It" at the Banking Technology Awards 2010.
