Over One Million Contactless Cards

In Turkey, credit cards are used for expenses of 60 TL – 30€ and debit cards are used for expenses of 35 TL and above and preferred mostly in textile, fuel and supermarket shopping. However, many expenses below 35 TL are made in one time and cash is preferred in such expenses. Social activities like transportation, fast food, book stores and cinema constitute the majority of these expenses.

So, how will we encourage using card instead of cash in general and for the amounts under these limits and how will we include changes in payment systems network? At this point, Garanti Payment Systems took the greatest step by adding MasterCard Paypass technology to the credit card Bonus for the first time in Europe in 2006 for achieving this purpose.

It added contactless payment feature called Trink first to Bonus and then other credit debit and prepaid cards. In the meanwhile, it's started to establish contactless payment terminals in places such as transportation and fast food, where the use of changes is highly intensive but not included in payment systems network before. By getting credit card out of traditional forms in order to make especially the young to be familiarized with this new payment system, it launched Bonus Trink Sticker used by sticking to the wrist watch and keyfob for the first time in Europe and cell phone providing an intermediary solution before NFC that is a first in the world.

For contactless system to become widespread much quickly, it expanded its Pos infrastructure at 3 points not included in payment systems network before.

Becoming widespread quickly and adapting innovations easily thanks to its knowledge on Contactless and both infrastructural and technological superiority, GPS carries out many studies for bringing, transportation, small ticket value and mobile payment together with contactless and leads the way again in many aspects in the world through its solutions produced specific to these 3 fields. Today, GPS maintains its leading position in Europe with the number of contactless card over 1 million.

Know-how of Garanti in this field has caused it developed itself much more day by day and it became the first bank launching NFC technology to the use of their customers for the first time in the world in 2010. The product called Bonuslu Avea was introduced to the sector and world in December 2010 at France – Paris CARTES & Identification with the participation of James Davlouros, Master Card Vice President of Master Cards Innovative Platforms and Mobile Payment Department, Remi de Fouchier, Gemalto Senior Vice President Trusted Service Management, Erkan Akdemir Avea General Manager and Mehmet Sezgin Garanti Payment System CEO. Today, thanks to the NFC technology allowing cell phones to take the place of credit card, which is developed by Garanti Payment Systems, consumers can make payments by getting their cell phones closer to the contactless payment terminals at the stores instead of using credit cards for payments.

Consumers using this product developed by the cooperation of Garanti Bank and Avea and launched under the name of Bonuslu Avea can define not just their credit cards, but also their prepaid cards as Bonuslu Avea if they want. Thereby, people can make shopping by using the money in their account if they wish. In the common project of Avea and Garanti, the necessity to buy a NFC-compatible cell phone is removed and the subscribers can load their credit cards and prepaid cards or both to their cell phones with the SIM card provided.

Subscribers, who can make payment by selecting the card they want to transact from the menu of their cell phones, can make payments in places such as mass transportation, building entrances, stadiums, parking areas and beverage and food vending machines in contracted cities.
